The governor of West Virginia, Joe Manchin, proclaims June 5th Destination Joy Day on behalf of Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Northern West Virginia and the celebration begins. Destination Joy presented by Lay's is a campaign that urges individuals and organizations to come on board and contribute their time, talents and resources to make children's wishes come true. The campaign launches June 5-14, 2007 and has many components ranging from retail product Wish Star sales to celebrity spokespeople participating in media interviews to public service announcements to local chapter Destination Joy events. Join us in this celebration and follow the Make-A-Wish® Links Page on the left for more information.
In the next four years, 100,000 children in the United States will be diagnosed with a life threatening medical condition. With 25,000 children annually eligible for a wish - and chapters nationwide collectively granting wishes to about half this number - its obvious that the need for our services is greater than ever. As such, the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of America will launch its first ever signature marketing campaign: Destination JoySM presented by LAY'S® Brand Potato Chips.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Northern West Virginia's mission is to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength, and joy.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Northern West Virginia has been granting wishes since 1989 serving the northern 32 counties in West Virginia. See Where to Find Us for specifics.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation® was founded in 1980 after a little boy with leukemia, Chris Greicius, realized his heartfelt wish to become a police officer. Chris rode in a police helicopter, had his own uniform custom-made, and is still the only honorary state trooper in Arizona history. Chris' dream meant more than anything to him, but even he couldn't have known that his wish would serve as the inspiration for a special group of volunteers, who formed an organization to provide such magical experiences for other kids in need. The Foundation hasn't stopped providing magical moments since. Since 1980, delivery of the Foundation's mission - to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions, and thus to enrich the human experience with hope, strength, and joy - has been supported by a growing legion of fully trained volunteers that now exceeds 25,000 nationwide, giving the Foundation an approximate 38:1 volunteer-to-staff ratio that is vital in its day-to-day service delivery. In that time, services have also reflected the life changing impact that a Make-A-Wish® experience has on children, families, referral sources, donors, sponsors, and entire communities. The Foundation's ultimate vision is that, some day, people everywhere will share the power of a wish® .
